Summer and Lichen Sclerosus: Enjoy without discomfort
Summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors, the sun and outdoor activities. However, for women who suffer from vulvar lichen sclerosus, this season can bring with it some challenges.
But let’s start at the beginning…
What is vulvar lichen sclerosus?
The lichen sclerosus is a chronic skin disease that affects the vulvar area, although it may be present in other parts of the body such as rubbing areas. It is characterized by white, itchy patches that may cause discomfort. These symptoms may be increased during the summer, because the skin is more exposed to the sun and heat.
That is why we would like to recommend you some tips for tips that can help you control the symptoms of lichen sclerosus and enjoy the summer without discomfort.
Tips for getting through the summer suffering from lichen sclerosus
➥ Breathable clothing: Underwear made of cotton or natural fabrics allows your skin to breathe and helps the affected area not to irritate as easily. So we do not advise you to wear the opposite: synthetic and tight underwear. As for swimsuits, opt for quick-drying swimsuits, although ideally, when you get out of the water, you should change to avoid the area being wet.
Gentle hygiene: Wash the vulvar area with a mild, unscented soap and warm water. Gently pat dry with a towel. Avoid rubbing or scratching the skin, as this may cause lesions, as well as avoiding irritating products that may worsen the symptoms.
➥ Hydration: Keeping your skin hydrated will help you control the symptoms of lichen sclerosus. We recommend using a mild, fragrance-free moisturizer, such as Dermnix specifically formulated for women with LS.
➥ Sun protection: One thing you can’t forget at home is sunscreen, as your skin may be more sensitive to the sun. Apply frequently (and more if you sweat or swim) every day, even on cloudy days.
➥Maintain your treatment routine: Whatever the season, it is important that you follow your treatment routine prescribed by your physician. If symptoms worsen, consult your lichen specialist.
Additional tips that may also be of great use to you:
- Do outdoor activities in the cooler hours of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon, avoiding the hottest hours, which will cause you to sweat more and therefore irritate the affected area.
- Take breaks in the shade and refresh your skin with cold water.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and prevent skin dryness.
Enjoy the summer without letting lichen sclerosus get in the way!
